The Digitized City outlines the climactic changes that are sweeping through our world that will be as powerful as those of the industrial revolution 200 years ago. The tectonic shift unfolding enabled by digital devices with their disruptive potential are changing cities, society and social life, connectivity, the economy and cultural life.
Estonoesunsolar – which means ‘this is not a ruin’ is an innovative regeneration project in Zaragoza that recycles unused lots in public space. This is based on a collaboration between architects and artists. Each site in the city, of which there are now 28, is recognizable by its distinctive green number.
Paris: The Musée du quai Branly is an interesting hydroponic building near the Eiffel Tower and reflects an interesting new aesthetic.
Valloria, an Italian village in the hinterland of Imperia, Liguria, has been revitalized by painted doors. Somewhat isolated, it was on the verge of dramatic decline until a local activist decided to invite artists to paint doors. Ten years later 72 artists have painted doors and the village has been revitalized. Houses have been re-occupied, local products are sold in the shops, a museum of forgotten things has opened and there is even a restaurant. There are food festivals, special events and the village has come back to life – all because of one simple idea: painted doors.
The collection based on ‘Graffiti Alley’ in Toronto has over 60 images. The alley runs south of Queen Street, which was once the edgy and alternative street of the city. As it slowly gentrified many felt displaced and occupied the backstreets. After many years the city ‘allowed’ the graffiti to spread over about one kilometre worth of wall space. The pictures show the alley as it is for most of the year from the garish to the beautiful. Every year now an event called ‘style in progress’ takes over the graffiti alley for a 24-hour period of legal painting. The alley is in effect a very long gallery. There are 39 photos from here and the collection is supplemented by additional graffiti images from the Raval area of Barcelona (Spain) and Maribor (Slovenia).
The mayor of Tirana in Albania Edi Rama is renowned for his strategy of painting the city. It is rumoured that for a number of years 4% of the city budget was spent on paint. The grey buildings of socialist Tirana are disappearing rapidly in a shock of colour that at times makes the buildings look like a Mondrian and at others like a Paul Klee. Now even the private sector is using interesting paint formations in its new buildings. The net result a novel urban look. As Edi Rama himself noted colour will not solve the problems of the city, but it can give citizens an uplift and so help provide the motivation, energy and will to grapple with difficulties.
